He was born on January 17, 1706. The obverse, or front, was designed by Don Everhart and is an image of Benjamin Franklin that captures the great patriot and statesman in the autumn of his years. The obverse design is based on an original bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The reverse of the coin was designed by Donna Weaver. It was taken from a 1776 Continental Currency dollar and features designs originally created by Benjamin Franklin. The reverse showcases the contributions made by Franklin to the spirit of early American coinage and currency design. Scientist Silver DollarIn 2006, the U.S. also honored Benjamin Franklin with the "Scientist" Silver Dollar. The obverse of the coin was designed by Norman E. Nemeth and is a representation of Benjamin Franklin's famous kite experiment. This design depicts an image of the younger Franklin and recalls the groundbreaking success of his experiments into the nature of electricity in June 1752. The reverse of the coin was designed by Charles L. Vickersand features Franklin's famous political cartoon, "Join or Die", which was published in the Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. The cartoon features a severed snake that is meant to convey Franklin's belief that colonial unity was truly a matter of life and death.
